Serenity now!

I think that most of the people who read this blog are very familiar with the upcoming movie “Serenity“. This post is for those who may not be so familiar. I’d actually be surprised if anyone reading this falls under that category, but better safe than sorry! If there are people not familiar with this movie, then that needs to be remedied, and I am doing my part.

It all started with a little show called “Firefly”.
Well actually it all started with a so-so movie called “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” which later turned into the phenomenal series of the same name, whose creator, Joss Whedon, later made the short lived but passionately loved “Firefly” series. Eleven of fourteen episodes actually aired before the series was canceled. Many fingers were pointed as to why, and most fingers landed squarely aimed at the network who aired the episodes out of their intended order, didn’t do much advertising support, put them in a crappy time slot, and quite often pre-empted the episodes thus leaving fans with an irregular schedule and a feeling of confusion, never knowing if it was on this week or not.
After its cancellation, there was quite an outcry by it’s loyal and devoted fan base. When the entire series came out on DVD, including three unaired episodes, it sold so well that it drew quite a lot of attention. Now, at least partially due to that success, Whedon has been able to make a feature length movie to continue where the series left off. If you’ve never seen the series, have no fear, the movie is made to be a stand alone film which can just as easily be enjoyed by people who have never had the pleasure of watching the series. While the series is not a pre-requisite for seeing the movie, I would highly recommend having yourself a “Firefly” marathon if at all possible, as it will whet your appetite and surely give you deeper more enjoyable experience with the movie.
For those of us devoted fans (also known as “Browncoats“), it is our duty to try and initiate as many people as we can to our ranks, and “Serenity” should be a great way to do that. Make it your mission to get someone who’s not already a Browncoat to see the movie with you. Make Mal proud.
Here’s the official synopsis:

Joss Whedon, the Oscar® – and Emmy – nominated writer/director responsible for the worldwide television phenomena of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE, ANGEL and FIREFLY, now applies his trademark compassion and wit to a small band of galactic outcasts 500 years in the future in his feature film directorial debut, Serenity. The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family –squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal.

Naturally I will be posting my thoughts here after we go to the premieres next week.
